Long hair can look great on many people regardless of gender—male or female, don’t fear long tresses! Maintaining long hair requires a bit more care than short hair, but with the right products, you’ll be looking and feeling great.
Male vs Female Hair Products
Using great products makes a big difference when it comes to having manageable, well-styled hair. Generally, men want something that’s quick and easy. Whether having long hair has been your staple look or you’re new to longer hair, there are many options to make your morning routine a breeze.
Now, hair is hair—whether you’re a man or woman, hair composition is structured the same. There are product lines that are solely geared toward men and other lines that carry products for both genders. The main differences with these products are usually packaging and fragrance. Products geared toward woman may be packaged in bright colors with flowery, perfume scents, while “male” products are more neutral colored and have more masculine, cologne scents. However, this by no means signifies they are only for that gender—you can use whichever fragrance and packaging you prefer!
In addition, women are more likely to process (and over-process) their hair, so the product range for them includes more variety—products for colored hair, damaged hair, etc. If you do want to look into adding some color to your hair, ask your Hair Cuttery stylist about our REDKEN Color Camo service that blends for more natural gray coverage.
Shampoo and Conditioner for Men
First and foremost, choosing a good shampoo and conditioner is the best place to begin. When your hair was short you may not have used conditioner at all, but as it gets longer, conditioner becomes a good idea to add into your regimen. Whether you’re chemically processing your hair or not, or using hot tools or not, your hair is still susceptible to damage from environmental factors like sun and wind.
Plus, the longer your hair grows, the more porous the ends become simply because that hair is older than the new growth. This porous hair can start to feel a bit dried out and just needs a little more TLC, which is where a gentle conditioner can spruce things up. Redken Brews is a line we carry that has been formulated with men in mind. Their Daily Shampoo and Daily Conditioner are gentle enough to be used every day and are formulated for every hair type. If two rounds of product application in the shower really won’t work for you or you’re a frequent traveler, try CIBU 3 in 1 Conditioning Shampoo and Body Wash which is shampoo, conditioner and body wash in one.
A few tips:
- If you can avoid it, try not to wash every day (aim for two to three washes per week) as the oils your scalp produce are essential in maintaining a good balance of moisture through your long hair.
- Make sure you’re brushing or combing from scalp to ends at least once daily to distribute these oils.
- On non-washing days, feel free to get your hair wet in the shower in order to re-style.
- Only apply conditioner from the mid-length to the ends of your hair.
Men’s Styling Products for Long Hair
Depending on the length of your long hair and your desired style, there are many styling products to choose from. With long hair, be careful not to use a styling product that has too much hold. You want to keep it on the light to medium spectrum to allow movement (if you desire a more slick and firm style, talk with your Hair Cuttery Professional about what they would recommend).
Hair Cream for Medium, Flexible Hold
Maybe your desired look is pulled back into a bun one day and down with flexible movement another. Redken Brews Fiber Cream has a medium hold and is great for either style. Apply to damp or dry hair and you’re ready to get on with your day. One product for multiple looks—score!
Styling Gel for Long, Curly Hair
Curly hair has a mind of its own but with the right products, it can be manageable and desirable. Most people either love or hate their curly hair, but how it’s maintained makes a huge difference. Those with lots of curls fear the brush, but don’t! In the shower, once you’ve applied your conditioner, comb from scalp to ends with a wide-tooth comb to remove the hair you’ve naturally shed but may be tangled within your curls. Also, the combing is good stimulation for your scalp and helpful in removing any buildup (this applies to all hair textures and types). Once you’ve finished washing and conditioning, apply Redken Brews Holding Gel to your damp curls and when it dries, there will be definition and movement to make everyone jealous.
Hair Spray for Maximum Hold
Once your hair is dry and set for the day, a little spritz of hairspray will keep the style set. Depending on the type of movement you want, or don’t want, this will determine the amount of hairspray you use. Check to see if your product is a minimal or maximum hold as this plays a large role in how much to use, too. Redken Brews makes a maximum hold hair spray that will get you from sun up to sun down with excellent hold, just be mindful how much you spray.
If long hair is new to your look, hopefully, you’re enjoying it. If it isn’t a new look maybe you’re seeking some changes to the style. Either way, talk with your Hair Cuttery Professional about tips and trick to help keep your long hair as healthy, manageable and stylish as possible.
